Van Alstyne seventh graders Emily Cholette and Sawyer Callies were identified by the Duke University Talent Identification Program’s (Duke TIP) 7th Grade Talent Search because they scored at or above the 95th percentile on a grade-level achievement test. As part of the program, these academically talented students took above-level college-entrance exams (ACT or SAT) to learn more about their abilities. As seventh graders, Emily and Sawyer achieved scores on the ACT or SAT rivaling those of half of college-bound seniors who took the tests. This year, just 39 percent of the program participants were invited to attend the annual state recognition ceremonies hosted by Duke TIP to honor the seventh graders who score highest on these ACT or SAT exams. Callies and Cholette were recognized at the University of North Texas in Denton for their exceptional testing scores.
