Van Alstyne Middle School Career Investigations classes were privileged to have two guest speakers visit the class. Donna Kern of Kinetic Solutions and Cynthia Glover of Texas Star Bank made time to come speak with the students.
Kern visited with the students about how to have an effective resume and the importance of a professional resume. She also talked with the students about how to have a successful job interview. Later in her time with the students, Kern shared her career journey from college years to present time. The students were curious about the challenges and rewards of running your own business. She Kern explained to students the skill sets necessary and personal characteristics that are important in being hired for a job and in being able to run your own business. She also shared with students the daily ins and outs of running her business.
Glover shared with the students the basics of banking and the functions of a bank. She also shared the different career opportunities in the banking industry and the personal characteristics and skill sets for each career. Glover shared her career journey with the students beginning with a co-op job in banking during high school which led through the ranks of banking into her current position of branch manager.
Both Kern and Glover were — and still are — involved in marketing and advertising, and both shared with the students about the work involved in this career. They both shared about different marketing projects they were involved in and how those came about.
Both ladies did an excellent job of sharing their professional history and wisdom with the students and answering all of the students’ questions throughout the visit.
