Howe resident L.B. Kirby was immortalized in a pubic ceremony on Sunday, Nov. 10. Kirby, an honest-to-goodness World War II hero who returned from war in the Pacific with a purple heart and seven bronze stars, is an extremely well-respected figure in town as evidenced by Sunday’s proceedings. He was honored with a proclamation by Howe Mayor Jeff Stanley anointing Nov. 10 as L.B. Kirby Day in the city. In addition, Howe is renaming Bledsoe Dr. as L.B. Kirby Ave. With multiple speakers heaping praise on Kirby at Howe High School on this Sunday, it amounted to an emotional afternoon for everyone involved, especially the man at the center of the proceedings. It was a well-deserved day of recognition for a humble hero.
