VA Fifth Graders Pitch Alternative Energy to Expert Community Panel

If the students in Kelly Moore’s fifth grade science class are any indication, the future of energy in Van Alstyne is in good hands.

As part of an alternative energy resource group project, those Van Alstyne Middle School students may have given city leaders, school officials and local energy company representatives a glimpse of the future.

Moore presented a scenario to her fifth grade science students in which the City of Van Alstyne was facing an energy crisis. The groups then had to work in small groups and form alternative energy companies. The groups would then pitch those companies to a panel of city and school officials and representatives from the Grayson-Collin Electric Cooperative.

The students, some a bit nervous, some a bit giggly but all with good ideas, came up to the podium in groups with handmade signage for their companies, complete with company names and logos. They used handouts and PowerPoint presentations to tell the panel what their plan was for a brighter future.

The panel, in this class period consisting of former educator Kent Whitehead, Van Alstyne Mayor Teddie Ann Salmon, City Manager Frank Baker, City Council members Russell Moore and John Jennings, Police Chief Tim Barnes and GCEC’s David McGinnis and Beau Williams, asked the students questions and gave them a bit more insight into alternative energy resources.

“The students are finding out that we currently already use hydro-electric energy and wind energy, and that…we can use a variety of them to fit our needs,” said Moore.

While Moore obviously has the final say, all the students earned an “A” in our book.

“The kids have had a blast with this,” added Moore. “They have really taken the lead on the project, and they have done a lot of the creative work themselves and brought a lot of things to the table that I didn’t tell them about. It’s really interesting to see them using the things that they’ve done in computer class and social studies to bring to my class and use in their presentations.”
