A Van Alstyne man is being held over for a grand jury hearing in relation to federal firearm statutes. William Grant Poth was arrested by federal authorities on March 10 under 18 U.S. Code § 922(g)(1) prohibiting certain individuals from possessing firearms, ammunition or explosives.
In court papers filed with the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas and obtained by the Leader the offense is set out as “Convicted Felon in Possession of a Firearm.” According to the state documents, Poth was in possession of a firearm and recently purchased ammunition. His initial appearance before the court was on March 12.
United States Magistrate Judge Amos L. Mazzant signed a court order holding Poth over for a grand jury hearing. In the detention order, Mazzant references Poth’s criminal history, mental health issues, violent behavior and the fact that he had recently purchased ammunition in stating that the defendant is believed to be a danger to the community and a flight risk and therefore to remain in custody.
Poth is represented by attorney Frank Warren Henderson of Frisco.
