Troop 44 celebrates its 101st birthday this week and will mark the occasion by honoring Scout Sunday over the March 1 weekend. The boys will prepare breakfast for church members at their sponsoring organization — First United Methodist Church in Van Alstyne — and will participate in worship services on Sunday. The Cub Scouts in Pack 6 will also celebrate cub scouting’s birthday with the annual Blue & Gold banquet at the elementary school on Saturday.
Heading into this weekend, the Boy Scouts held their bi-annual Court of Honor Tuesday evening, recognizing merit badge achievements and rank advancements for all members of the Troop. Altogether, 43 merit badges were earned and 13 new ranks achieved. The boys are looking forward to welcoming into the troop some new members who will soon be “crossing over” into Boy Scouts from Cub Scouts this Spring.
Both Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts extended a hearty “thank you” to the community for participating in the recent “Scouting for Food” food drive, during which more than 1,400 items were collected and donated to the local food pantry for those in need in Van Alstyne.
Activities on the horizon for the scouts include the district-wide camping event, Camporee, at beautiful Camp James Ray on Lake Texoma the first weekend in April, which will feature a “zombie survival” theme this year. Scouts will be working to sell flags in advance of the Memorial Day flag service in May, and the Friends of Scouting in Van Alstyne Car Show has been set for May 31. You will want to mark your calendars now for this yearly fundraiser that goes to pay for upkeep and utilities for the scout facilities.
