Van Alstyne Middle School held its 10th Annual Spelling Bee on Jan. 16. During 13 very difficult rounds, 23 contestants ranging from fifth through eighth grades spelled words such as abstruse, focaccia, genoise and cephalopod. The last three rounds were the most exciting as seventh grader Abby Van Sice and eighth grader Carlie Willeford battled it out spelling words such as garnishee and longevous.
Ultimately, Abby Van Sice came out on top after spelling assimilative.
Van Sice will go on to compete in the Grayson County Spelling Bee on Feb. 5 at 1 p.m. in the Board Room of Grayson College’s main campus.
The winner of the County Bee will participate in the 56th Annual Dallas Morning News Regional Spelling Bee at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 22. The winner of the Dallas bee will represent the Dallas region at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., in June.
