Books for Sale!

Book Sale! The Friends of the Library Annual Book Sale is this weekend. Thursday night from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. is preview night for Friends of the Library only. You can join the Friends on site that evening if you want first choice of the books. The general public is welcome from Friday 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. The sale is held at the Van Alstyne Community Center.

We finally have our book choice for the Tween Book Club, which has its first meeting Oct. 3. The book is Wonder by R. J. Palacio. We will have a limited number of copies for check out by the participants. It is open to 10-12 year-olds and will meet from 4 to 5 p.m. on Thursdays for six to seven weeks.

The Teen Council video competition is up and running. Get your entries ready. Check out our web site at www.cityofvanalstyne.us/library for more details and for an entry form.

The Third Monday Book Club choice for next month is Lie Still by Julia Heaberlin. Julia is a former reporter for the Fort Worth Star Telegram and this is her first novel, but certainly won’t be her last. The setting is a small town in Texas and there is a murder mystery with some tense moments and a lot of laugh-out-loud stuff, too. Grab a copy to read and then join us on Monday, Oct. 21 at noon with a brown bag lunch.

Scary Story Night at the Library will be Oct. 31. We’ll have an early session — at about 5:30 p.m. — for the younger children. Then we’ll set up for a scarier time for the older children and teens. Keep an eye on our web site and future Bookshelf columns for more details. It should be a scary good time.

October 19 is the City’s Fall-der-All and the Library will not be left out. Teen Council will have face painting and a fun game at our booth. They are still developing the details, but if you’ve ever thought you might want a date with Prince Charming you should plan to check out this booth.

As noted in an earlier article, the Library will be changing operating hours starting next week. We will no longer be open until 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Monday through Thursday we will close at 6 p.m. We will still be open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for those of you who cannot get here during the week.

Hope to see you around the Van Alstyne Public Library.
