The first, and hopefully annual, Howe Invitational Cross Country Meet was held at the high school on Oct. 5 with runners from 10 schools competing.

Light rain and cool temperatures provided a welcome relief from the humid conditions of the past week, and the Lady Bulldogs took advantage to win the team championship in the varsity division.

Darci Foster finished third and Bailey Tyler was fifth to lead the team to the win.

Brandon Wall had the top finish for the Howe varsity boys, finishing seventh as the team took second place.

The Van Alstyne cross country team traveled south to Dallas to compete in the Jesuit High School meet, held at Norbuck Park.

Evan McQuirk finished second in a field of 206 runners in the boys Class 5A division, running the 5K distance in 16:30.

Molly McQuirk finished 17th in the girls’ class 5A division with a time of 20:44 in a field of 182 runners.

Freshman Hannh Taylor had an impressive second-place finish in the girls 4A run with a time of 14:37. Raigan Servati finished 10th with a time of 15:42, while Madison Reno was 17th at 17:00.

In the boys 4A run, Jacob Taylor finished 13th, Blake Linnebur was 30th and Travor Boyer finished 33rd.

Both teams, Howe and Van Alstyne, will run in the Melissa Cardinal Invitational on Saturday in their final preparation for district meets.
