The high school cross country season picks up as we head into October with district meets just three weeks away.
Molly and Evan McQuirk traveled north to Stillwater, Okla., on Sept. 28 to compete in the high school Class 6A (Oklahoma high school sports go up to 6A) division of the Cowboy Jamboree. This was the 77th running of this cross-country challenge which is open to college, juco and high school athletes.
Class 6A is the highest classification in Oklahoma high school sports.
After a two-hour rain delay, Evan covered the 5,000-meter course in 16:57.27, finishing 13th in a field of 160 runners.
Molly finished 26th in a field of 145 girls, running a 12:30.27 over the 3,200-meter course.
The rain held off for most of the morning at Denison as Van Alstyne and Howe cross country runners competed in the Waterloo Run.
Highlighting the event was the performance of the Van Alstyne girls team, which would have won a team championship in the junior varsity division if one were awarded.
Hannah Taylor finished the two-mile course in 14:59 to win the event, while Raigan Servati finished second in 15:44. Elaine Pedersen finished 11th for the Lady Panthers.
Howe JV runner Airanna Smith finished ninth, Jaylen Moss finished 21st and Kelsel Lux was 24th for the Lady Bulldogs.
In the junior varsity boys division, Jacob Taylor of Van Alstyne finished seventh and Blake Broussard was eighth.
In the varsity girls’ division, Howe’s Kendall Nelms finished 11th.
On Oct. 5, Howe will host the first annual Howe Invitational at the high school, and Van Alstyne will travel to Norbuck Park in Dallas to compete in the Jesuit XC Classic.
