Howe Moves to 2-0 With Commerce Win

The Howe Bulldogs improved their early season record to 2-0 with a 4-0 win over the visiting Commerce Tigers on Feb. 21.

The Bulldogs jumped on the visitors early, scoring three runs in the bottom half of the first inning to take the lead. Senior Randle Nix had an infield single to open the home half, while Quinton Harris reached on a dropped third strike. A walk to Easton Ross loaded the bases and Zach Blevins drove in two runs with a double. Ross scored on a ground-out by Caleb Ake and Josh Griffin went back to the mound with a 3-0 lead.

Griffin worked five innings, striking out seven, to get his first win of the season.

Griffin Underwood got the save, pitching the final two innings and recording a pair of strikeouts.

Blevins, who led the offense with a 2-for-3 night at the plate, drove in the Bulldogs final run in the third, while Harris had one hit in three trips against a crafty left-hander who got no support from his offense.

After a Monday game in Lindsay, Howe will play five games in the Gunter Tournament over the March 1 weekend.

The Bulldogs traveled to Lindsay and continued their winning ways with a 9-1 win over the Knights on Feb. 24.

Garrett Fulenchek picked up his second win of the season with a one-hit effort over five innings. He struck out 11 and blanked the Knights over those five frames.

Matt Griffin worked the last two innings,giving up the lone Lindsay run while fanning two.

The Bulldogs scored a pair of runs in the first inning as senior Randle Nix stroked a leadoff triple. After a walk to Quinton Harris, Fulenchek singled home Nix for Howe’s first run of the contest. A ground out to the right side by Bryce Mosier plated Fulenchek.

Nix walked to open the third inning, swiped second, then came home on an RBI double by Fulenchek.

Howe blew the game open in the sixth inning, scoring four runs on RBI hits by Caleb Ake, Nix, Harris and Fulenchek.

Fulenchek was the leading hitter for the night, going 3-for-4, while Nix was 2-for-3 and scored three runs.
