Now that both Howe and Van Alstyne have wrapped up the sports calendar for the year — with one notable exception — what’s on tap for the remainder of the school year?
That exception being that exceptional long-distance runner Evan McQuirk will be shooting for a state-championship this morning, May 9, when he goes for the gold in the boys 3200-meter run at the UIL State Track & Field Meet at the University of Texas in Austin.
Two items are on the calendar after Mother’s Day, which is May 11: on the 12th, the annual Powder-Puff football game will be played at Panther Stadium with a 6:30 p.m. kickoff; on May 15, the Van Alstyne Athletic Booster Club will recognize Panther athletes at the annual banquet at 6:30 p.m. in the middle school cafeteria. (Note: cafetorium is not recognized as a word by my spell-checker.)
Later in the month we will have news about summer camps for the various sports and also introduce a couple of new coaches, and one could be Nick Saban.
That’s called a tease.
Zach Davis is an All-Star
Panther senior Zach Davis competed in one more basketball game this season, the Al Hambrick All-star game at Austin College on April 26. Playing for the winning East team, Davis scored 22 points in the contest.
