It’s apparent that the softball coaches in District 12-2A recognized the achievements of the 2014 Lady Panther team as nine players were named to the all-district teams
Van Alstyne had two players picked for superlative awards as junior Maddie Horn was named the league’s Defensive Player of the Year. Horn, who moved to shortstop this season, had an outstanding year in the field. She provided a big offensive boost for the Lady Panthers, as well, batting .561 from her leadoff spot in the lineup.
Freshman infielder Peyton Welch was named the district’s Newcomer of the Year. Welch stepped into a starting role from the first game of the season, and the third baseman was a solid contributor on the defensive side and a steady performer from her third spot in the batting order.
Three Lady Panther players earned first team awards. Lauren Gibson, winner of 21 games from the circle and the team’s cleanup hitter, had an outstanding sophomore season.
Bailey Brown had a smooth transition from the infield to the catcher’s position this season and was a big contributor to the offensive success of the team.
Cheyenne Goodenow also made a position change, moving to the outfield. She provided solid, up-the-middle defense for the Lady Panthers.
Reagan Reece and Ashley Burts were named to the second team for 2014. Madison Reno and Andrea Espitia received honorable mention awards.
Congratulations to these leaders of the 2014 Lady Panthers.
