Let’s see. If Hollywood was going to script a story about the final game of the season for a young, struggling softball team, how would it go?
If the team had just one senior and that player pitched five innings, gave up just three hits and struck out nine, would it work if she also had the run-rule scoring hit? Naw, no way the publics gonna buy that.
The Lady Panthers final softball game against Leonard turned out exactly that way, however, as senior Hunter Offill put together those stats in her final game in Van Alstyne blue.
With a little creative base running in the bottom of the fifth, Offill’s triple drove in run number 12 in a 12-2 win over the Lady Tigers. Leading 10-2 going into that inning, A single by Bailey Crow set the table and Maddie Horn’s RBI double brought home Crow to make it an 11-2 game. Horn moved to third and could have scored if not held up by Coach Baldwin to allow Offill to have her final trip to the plate.
With Horn on third, (drum roll please) Offill lined a shot to right field, driving in Horn with the 12th and final run of the season for the Lady Panthers.
Horn finished 2-for-2 and Lauren Gibson had a 2-for-4 night at the plate.
The senior night celebration was short, as Offill, a four-year varsity starter, was the sole senior on this Lady Panther team.
The Lady Panthers finished the season at 13-15, 3-9.
