Pigskin Kick-off: Howe, Van Alstyne Open Seasons Friday

Holliday Eagles at Van Alstyne

The rematch won’t be played in the stifling heat of Allen’s new multi-million dollar stadium but the Panthers’ first game of the 2013 football season will bring in the Holliday Eagles.

You know, the team with the letters H.E.R.O on their uniforms. To the uninitiated, that means Holliday Eagles Roll On. Not hero and, after checking the roster, Christian Bale is nowhere to be found. That means no superheroes.

The Eagles do have a new coach as Frank Johnson takes the helm.

Holliday will be big up front, and one of their best is center Seth Oliver, a three-year starter at that position. And the Eagles do have speed as Andrew Edgin, a wide receiver and defensive back, returns after garnering Newcomer of the Year honors in District 5-2A.

The Eagles finished third in that league last season with a 3-2 mark and were 6-5 overall. Holliday has a winning history with 36 playoff appearances, ninth best in Class 2A.

The experts at Texas Football magazine pick Holliday to finish second in their league behind Jacksboro.

Howe Bulldogs at Lindsay

Don’t let the classification of the Knights lull you into some false sense of security. Lindsay has always had tough, skilled football teams that do not beat themselves.

Coming back for his second year, Head Coach Charles Boles will have to deal with heavy graduation losses; however, they do have some experience as 16 letter winners return.

Quarterback John Haverkamp passed for 900 yards last season where he started all 12 games. Running back Mark Krahl has speed and power and he rushed for 450 yards in a backup role in 2012.

When you look at the 4.6 speed of linebacker Elijah Walker, you know he is no relative of us slow foots.

Last, but by no means least, any Lindsay player named Anderle just has to be good, and this year’s team has Caleb Anderle at wide receiver.

Lindsay is picked to repeat as District 7-1A champs after their 5-0 run in 2012.
