Our belated congratulations to Panther football star Jeff Dietz who was named to the first-team Academic All-state team for 2013.
The team, recognized by the Texas High School Coaches Association, selects players who have achieved an overall grade point average of 92 or higher over the course of the year.
Dietz was an All-district selection on the 2013, District 6-2A team.
On Feb. 8 the McQuirk Racing team traveled to Dallas to compete in the RAM racing- Hot Chocolate 5K at Fair Park.
In 33-degree weather (perfect for long-distance running) Evan McQuirk breezed to a first place finish in the men’s race with a time of 16:23, nearly one minute ahead of the second-place runner.
Molly McQuirk won first place in her age group with a time of 21:10, good enough for seventh among the women.
The two are getting ready for the 2014 track season which begins Feb. 27 with the Run for the Ribbons in Whitesboro.
Lost among all the attention of the new district alignments announced by the University Interscholastic League was a rule change adopting the NCAA’s 40-second play clock in lieu of the 25-second clock previously used. The 40-second period shall begin at the end of the previous play.
In an administrative change, the UIL will no-longer refer to the first week of games as “zero-week.” Week one for the 2014 season will be for games played on August 28-30.
Hope that clears up some confusion and it is a long-overdue change.
