Week three of the Van Alstyne seven-on-seven league was played last Monday night at Panther Stadium. Teams from Anna, Melissa, Howe and Van Alstyne have been competing since June 3, and the action gets hot and heavy as these Highway 5 rivals meet.

Howe and Anna started the varsity proceedings, and the Bulldogs wasted no time in getting the scoring started. After stopping the Coyotes in their first possession, Howe drove the ball 45 yards to light up the scoreboard.

One of the big plays in the march was a pass from Joaquin Lopez to Brandon Wall. Two receptions by Anthony Hawthorne moved the ball inside the Anna 10-yard line before Lopez found Stratton Carroll for the touchdown.

The Bulldogs were coming off of an excellent showing last week where they tied Van Alstyne and were edged by Anna. Quinton Harris made a couple of outstanding defensive plays for the Bulldogs as they stymied the first two Coyote possessions.

We turned our attention to second “game” as the Coyotes challenged Van Alstyne.

Shawn Wheeler got an interception on Anna’s first offensive possession and hauled in an Alex Phillips’ pass to get the Panthers on the board.

On Van Alstyne’s third possession, a touchdown pass by Phillips to Donte’ Kehler capped the march. The two teams traded scores throughout the remainder of the contest, but the Wheeler score put the Panthers on top.

The league will wrap up play on the June 30.
