For Van Alstyne’s Evan McQuirk, erasing a disappointing 46th place finish in 2012 was almost as rewarding as taking home the first place medal in the 2013 state cross country championships.

McQuirk outclassed the field with a 16:03:79 time over the course at Old Settler’s Park in Round Rock, finishing nearly seven seconds ahead of Wyatt Kieler of East Bernard who finished second.

McQuirk joins Anna’s Cody Hughes as the only male runner from the area to win a state crown in cross-country. Hughes won his title in 2006.

Molly McQuirk, with a time of 12:17.54,finished 12th in the girls 2A race. Her finishing time was almost a full minute quicker than her 28th place finish in 2012. Freshman Hannah Taylor finished 60th in her debut appearance at the state finals, running a 13:13.35 over the two-mile course.

Big props to Evan for capping a season of hard work and to both Molly and Hannah for their notable achievements.
