We hate to be the one using the R-word, but it’s pretty clear that both the Howe and Van Alstyne powerlifting teams will be in rebuild mode this season.

Van Alstyne will be missing the talents of Lori Arion and Meg Jones and Howe is looking to replace Kaleb Espinoza, who finished second at the regional meet last season.

Arion made it to state last season, setting regional records in the bench press and total weight for her 165-pound class.

The two teams took their first steps towards replacing those losses, competing in the 2014 Anna Invitational held at the Anna Middle School on Jan. 11. With 97 girls from 14 schools entered in the meet, Van Alstyne’s Bailey Allen had the top finish among lifters from Van Alstyne and Howe.

Allen totaled 490 pounds lifted in the three events: squat, bench press and dead lift, to finish second in the 165-pound class.

Lady Panther lifter Mariisa Carson totaled 575 pounds to finish fourth in the 132-pound weight class.

Jamie Patterson, representing Howe, lifted 475 pounds to finish fifth in the 123-pound class for the top finish among Lady Bulldog lifters.

On the boys’ side, Panther standout Will Brogdon finished second in the 275-pound weight class with a total lift of 1,265 pounds.

Adam White of Van Alstyne also lifted over 1,000 pounds with his fifth place finish in the 198-pound class, lifting 1,065 total.

Van Alstyne will travel to Princeton on Jan. 18 to compete in that event. Howe’s next meets will be on Jan. 23 for the girls team in Whitesboro and on Jan. 25 for the boys team in Whitesboro.
